weekend plans + 12 great chicago bars and restaurants for date night

At 37 weeks pregnant, Mini Z could make his or her arrival any day now so Marc and I have been squeezing in as many date nights as we can. On Tuesday, we went to Rick Bayless’ newest Chicago venture, seafood-oriented Leña Brava, for dinner. The food was ridiculously good. Everything is cooked on an open hearth, wood-burning oven or prepared at their raw bar. Must try dishes from their “fire and ice” menu – the wood oven roasted chicken a la leña, the black cod al pastor and the grill roasted pineapple.weekend plans, chicago, places to eat, date night ideas, bar, restaurantThis weekend we have a double date night planned with some of our good friends. We will be going to Stefanie Izard’s latest addition to her Goat empire, Chinese-inspired Duck Duck Goat. I’ve written about Girl and the Goat and Little Goat Diner here. The Duck Duck Goat menu features things like wood fired duck heart dim sum, goat belly lo mein and crispy frog legs. I’m looking forward to an evening of great food and great conversation!

When it comes to the city of Chicago, you’ve got plenty of bar and restaurant options. I’ve rounded up 12 of my favorites for date night below. Whether you’re looking for a rooftop bar in the heart of the city, an intimate French restaurant with a trendy atmosphere or a BYOB Lakeview hotspot, these restaurants offer a perfect balance between good food and good vibes. Check it out – weekend plans, chicago, places to eat, date night ideas, bar, restaurantweekend plans, chicago, places to eat, date night ideas, bar, restaurantDusek’s  This is your full-service date night option right here. Start off with appetizers and entrees at Dusek’s then head to an after-dinner show at Thalia Hall. Finish off the night with a drink at the downstairs Punch House or head next door to the Tack Room for some traditional cocktails and live piano music.

Vivo – Sleek, sophisticated atmosphere and the menu is loaded with traditional Italian entrées. Call ahead of time and book Table 70, one of the most sought-after tables in the city. This secretive little spot sits in an old elevator shaft above the rest of the already romantic restaurant. It’s perfectly secluded, but not too far removed, and you can have all the privacy you want. A few years ago we reserved Table 70 for my birthday celebration. I highly recommend it for special occasions.

Maude’s Liquor Bar This is where you come to eat all of your favorite French foods in a cool, modern space. Inside it’s like taking a trip to Paris – leather banquettes, weathered farmhouse tables and elegant fixtures. Great place for a pre, post or just dinner date.

Tango Sur – This restaurant’s cozy ambiance and BYOB policy make it the perfect night for two. The Argentinian steakhouse serves a mean filet, not to mention some serious empanadas. Ask for the flan with dulce de leche and two spoons for dessert.

The Violet Hour  If you really want to wow your date, this place is your spot. With a “secret” door that blends into the building and blocked by a wall of dark curtains, guests are only allowed in if table spaces are open. The cocktails are handcrafted by some of the best mixologists in the city, and since it’s date night I’d suggest ordering the Juliet and Romeo.

Geja’s Café – Consistently voted one of the most romantic restaurants in the city. Even though it’s small, you’ll immediately feel how special it is from the moment you take your seat. Focused on fondue, this place is a hands-on food experience. Enjoy the dark cozy atmosphere and the acoustic flamenco guitar music.

CH Distillery This place serves their own craft spirits in classic and creative cocktails. Tours are held every Saturday and every other Tuesday so you can see how your drinks are made before you settle into a booth together and enjoy a cocktail. I recommend the Czech Mate which is a combination of cinnamon infused vodka, grapefruit juice and honey syrup. It’s delicious!

Piccolo Sogno – This charming restaurant is perfection. Delicious Italian food and an amazing atmosphere. We order the antipasto appetizer every time, and the best entrées come from the wood-fired oven. Don’t let the exterior deceive you, this place has the best outdoor patio in the city!

drumBAR  Go for the incredible views and stay for the whiskey. This upscale bar atop the Raffaello Hotel, with an intimate and cool cocktail patio, focuses on expertly crafted cocktails. Showcasing house-made infused syrups, the cocktail menu concentrates on savory drinks. I’d love to try Steven Avery’s Innocence or If There Be Thorns.

GT Fish & Oyster  Ask to be seated in the back dining room as the lighting and overall mood is a little more romantic, or keep it casual by grabbing a spot at the oyster bar. You can’t go wrong with the fish tacos, shrimp bruschetta or the Maine lobster roll here.

RM Champagne Salon Tucked away in the West Loop is this super swanky champagne spot. With a picture-perfect atmosphere (the courtyard is full of strung-up lights) and plenty of Champagne options, this place can be a little pricey so be prepared to splurge a little.

La Scarola – Looking for a casual date night spot then this is your place. Located in the River West neighborhood, this cozy old-school Italian joint serves healthy sized portions of authentic Italian cuisine and a great selection of wine. I love their grilled calamari and any of their pasta dishes.

Let me know if you try out any of these spots and fill me in on any of your favorite Chicago restaurants!
