for your home | the primary essentials

While I’m knee deep in our home renovation, I wanted to share one of my new favorite home decor brands with you – The Primary Essentials. Below I’ve rounded up a few items from their shop that have recently caught my eye. I have to have that Thompson Street Studio linen and denim quilt and how great is that navy cotton stitched face bolster? Other top picks – the Clam Lab green tumbler, the Humble Ceramics canisters and the Doug Johnston baskets.the primary essentials, for your home, design, interiors, home decor, ceramics, textiles, officeHere’s a little bit about The Primary Essentials – Striving to source goods that have a subtle yet distinctive impact, The Primary Essentials believes in the importance of independent designers and artisans and their individual outlook on the world. The TPE folks tell us that they aim to always provide new outlets of unique beauty while constantly holding true to classics. The Primary Essentials opened in Brooklyn in the Fall of 2013 as a place to provide a meticulously edited mix of special objects with an emphasis on how we live our daily lives.

What items do you feel are essential in your home? Do you have a place you go to to find them? Lately I’ve spent more hours that I’d like to admit searching through home decor sites and Etsy shops, and I’ll be sharing more of my finds with you in the coming months.

monday moodboard 04

monday, moodboard, inspiration, art, designIt’s a brand new week! I’m slowly gathering steam and some weekday inspiration. This week’s moodboard is inspired by neutral hues and deep navy blues, all easy on the eyes and pretty to look at. Sometimes I unintentionally pin images with a similar or complimentary color palette, and I seem to have done that with these interior/home decor photos — white walls, shades of blue and honey-colored wood. Lately I’ve started being more intentional about saving color palettes that get a reaction out of me. This is one of them. I’ve also been really drawn to simple black and white works of art like these pieces from French illustrator Amélie Fontaine. Enjoy this Monday moodboard!

hall bath before and after

bathroom remodel, hall bath after, home renovation, diyWelcome to my new hall bath! I’d say it’s come a long way! The goal was simple – to make it feel fresh, happy, minimal and modern with some quirk and interest because it’s also going to be the kids’ bathroom.

To keep costs down, we kept the original layout and toilet but all the other fixtures and finishes are new. To sum it up, we gutted it down to the studs, removed all the fixtures, re-did old plumbing, installed ventilation to the outside, replaced the window, updated the electrical, insulated and drywalled, tiled the floors, installed a new vanity and sink, tiled the bath, hung a new door and light fixture, trimmed out the window, installed new baseboards and painted.  Read More

8 diy storage ideas for kids’ rooms and nurseries

storage ideas, kids room, nursery, woodThe best kinds of DIY projects are the ones that don’t look handmade. They’re the ones that blend in so seamlessly and look so natural that you’d think they were purchased from a store. Everything in this roundup is inspired by wood and simple in design, which is generally what I’ve been gravitating towards for my own nursery decor. Take a look around and see if there’s anything here that might inspire your decor or next DIY project.  Read More

I’m back today with an update on and inspiration for the nursery! We’ve had some major changes in this room in the last few months. We pulled up the old hardwood floors, installed carpet, replaced old baseboards and trim, installed a new window and painted the walls a creamy, neutral white called Frost by Behr. We were originally planning on painting this room a soft minty green but made a swap at the last minute. We’ve gotten some of the other big to-do’s taken care of too – purchased the dresser and changing table, put together the crib, ordered blackout shades and installed a closet organizer. It’s pretty close to being done! I can’t wait to show you the finished product in a month or so.

As far as decor, I love a mix of white, wood, grey and blue as you can see in these photos. I knew that would be the base for the room as well as a lot of natural materials in their raw state (unfinished wood shelving and handwoven baskets). I wanted the room to flow and match the rest of the house which was my main goal. From there, I searched for mint green/teal accents to make the room more gender neutral. I wanted items that would work with future babies too, regardless of their sex. We also spent a lot of time debating the whole rocker verse glider thing. Hey moms, what’s your preference?nursery, art, prints, gender neutral, inspirationFor months I’ve been on the lookout for beautiful prints that can add some bright pops of color and inspiration to our little one’s nursery. I’m sticking with a primarily light and white palette in the room but I want to bring in some pops of color and a bit of boho with the artwork and accessories. Here are a few of my favorites – I really can’t stop going back to Olivia Raufman’s Goodnight World print and Britt Bass’ Honey Calcite print! I may need to paint a few things as well!
