elizabeth mayville
I adore the work of artist and illustrator Elizabeth Mayville. Currently based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Mayville is inspired by the idea of “home” and the “small bits of life that bring us comfort and a sense of stability.” Her original gouache and oil paintings are delicate and detailed and I love her painterly style. I find her work sweet, simple and soothing – maybe it’s the color palette. I am especially inspired by these top knot and braid prints – an incredibly cool concept, I think. Mayville says “The beautiful thing about art is that it is enormously wide open and you can shift around within it, finding things that resonate with you as you change and grow.” – Sharing the Process | Poppytalk
To see more of her work visit her website and her Etsy shop. Some of her paintings are currently being shown at Lafontsee Galleries in Grand Rapids, Michigan at Gallery Fifty in Traverse City, Michigan and at The Artisan’s Bench in Brighton, Michigan.

spread the love
I thought I’d share something new around here. As an artist myself, I like to spread awareness about other artists I love and I’ve been thinking a lot about how I could do that here. So next week I’ll be starting a fun new series – I’ll feature the work of some talented artists, illustrators, photographers, graphic designers, textile designers, etc and bring to life some of their stories. I’ve already started putting together some posts and I can’t wait to share them!top saenz | bottom sunoda
a gift wrap guide
I’ve noticed each year gift wrapping gets a little more creative – bringing in new elements that make what’s around the gift just as special as what’s inside. I like to package each gift I’m giving with a little imagination. My wrapping essentials include kraft boxes and pretty paper, glassine bags and tiny envelopes, baker’s twine, washi tape, stamps and lots of ribbon – you can never have too many colors or patterns! I also like to decorate my gifts with unique items like jingle bells and buttons, glitter stickers, tinsel and metallic doillies. Here’s a little guide to help you wrap your gifts:

three one two 01 | a balloon project
I love Chicago. It’s such a beautiful city – four seasons, delicious food, edgy architecture and a vibrant artistic community to fuel my creativity. What more could I ask for? I thought it would be fun to feature some of Chicago’s local artists and trendy neighborhoods. I’m calling this series three one two – that’s Chicago’s area code for those of you who don’t know. Other topics may include design, travel, entertainment, cool spaces and upcoming events. So follow along and get to know our great city!
Starting it off is a trio of Chicago based creatives – Jillian Barthold, Lauren Connolly and Kady Dennell – whose project really caught my eye. It’s called inflated/deflated and it features handpainted sentiments on deflated balloons.
The words written on our balloons range from humorous quotes to heartfelt feelings and memories. These words are marked on the surface of inflated balloons, and like that of one’s thoughts being released, so too is the air of the balloon. Deflated the once largely marked letters become small, expressive, and intricate forms. -inflated/deflated project
Their thoughts are funny and sweet and the results of this process are a cool typographic effect. Be sure to check out all of the prints. New additions are added to their blog and dozens are available on Etsy.
